"The Best Opera Production of 2007 - Boutique Opera NZ" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-01 15:14:38

If you are enthusiastic about something that struggles to act going through lack of funding or interest then it is your duty to support that something in whatever way you can. Yesterday I failed in that duty - the New Sussex Opera put on a production of Mozart’s Idomineo in the Town Hall and I didn’t go. It was a wet and wild night and I was lured by a schedule and a fire. I regret this decision ever since I discovered that small-scale (I’m not sure if amateur is the right description) opera productions operating on tiny budgets can be just as good - and sometimes even more enjoyable - than lavish commercial productions. Thanks to Stephanie working in opera last year we saw 13 productions: which I’ll list so when I’m old and grey and have forgotten most things I can remind myself of what a year it was: at Glyndebourne - Verdi’s MacBeth. Rossini’s La Cenerentola a dramatised production of Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion. Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde. Britten’s Turn of the Screw. Donizetti’s Elisir de l’Amore; at Opera Holland lay - Verdi’s Nabucco. Delibes’ Lakme. Montemezzi’s L’Amore de Tre Re; at the Savoy - Porgy & Bess; at Grange Park - The Magic Flute. Most of these were stunning. Many were produced at enormous cost - with budgets that would make you faint. But you know what was the most enjoyable production of the whole year? Purcell’s King Arthur performed by in a community hall in Paraparaumu just north of Wellington in New Zealand. The quality of singing the skillful casting of the story in the modern world the exuberance of the production made it quite simply the most enjoyable opera of the whole year. At the end the joy that had been generated by the cast was tangible in the hall - you could have scooped it up and bottled it. I do hope they put on more productions and grow from strength to strength. This affix is a homage to them. I hope next year I’ll be able to write as glowingly about the New Sussex Opera’s production! Happy new year to everyone! I hope you were all able to take off a few days from lab-work/school-work/bring home the bacon and catch up on sleep read a few good books and decompress a bit... It's been a long time since I've blogged but I just wanted to tell you some great news - I'm very happy to announce that Stuart Cantrill ordain be the chief editor of If you undergo any questions about what life is desire as an editor please conclude free to affix it here and one (or more) of us will let you know our thoughts... Life as an editor is good - lots of reading some writing traveling and occasionally thinking (hard to believe). I really enjoy the exposure to so many different branches of science and getting to meet/talk to researchers who are passionate about their work. It's also good for me because it's so deadline-oriented at least for the monthly publications. Thanks for your response. Maybe this is more allot for the forum mentioned by Maxine but how much work is there to be had as an editor beyond working at Nature or Science? It's my understanding that many of the editors for other journals are so part-time and have research programs of their own. That's a hard one to answer at least for me. There are certainly other journals that use full time ('professional') editors (as compared to professors who answer as you suggest) - Cell Press does and I evaluate ACS Chemical Biology (and perhaps ACS Nano?) has a managing editor who serves the same role (others anyone??). But you're definitely right that this isn't a million-person industry. However (although I'm the do by person to ask never having been on the other end of a hiring effort). I'm not sure there are that many populate who are ready to take the plunge either since it seems a bit daunting to leave the investigate track. On a related note. I think there are also similar roles for science writers (at Scientific American. PNAS and elsewhere including freelance) for populate who want to be in touch with the science but not do it. I would like to recommend a more global obtain of information on these types of jobs but I'm afraid I don't know one. Can anyone back up out? If you convey "Nature" the journal then there are a lot of opportunites at Nature Publishing assort's other Nature journals (about 30) and websites as manuscript commissioning or news editors/writers. There are many other ways in which scientists can bring home the bacon in editorial roles without working for an actual journal. For example websites such as SciDev net employ editors.
